How we calculate

Each payment is converted to a full year: monthly times twelve, quarterly times four, half-yearly times two and annual times one. Adding those annual amounts gives your total fixed payments for the year.

Amounts paid less often than monthly are added together, divided by twelve and rounded up to whole cents. This reserve plus monthly payments gives your monthly requirement. Individual monthly figures in the table are rounded and their sum can differ by a few cents.

Count each bill only once. Utility installments are planned payments, not a guarantee of the final bill. Add groceries and other variable expenses in the budget calculator. This tool does not recommend a fixed-expense ratio.

The reasoning behind these numbers, with sources, is in the article: Fixed expenses list: what belongs in your budget?.

Frequently asked

What counts as a fixed expense?

Recurring commitments such as rent, planned utility payments, phone bills, insurance and memberships. An annual bill also uses part of your monthly budget. Keep savings goals and variable purchases separate.

Should I enter a monthly share or the full bill?

Enter the actual amount per payment and its billing cycle. For annual insurance, enter the full annual bill. The calculator works out the monthly share.

Does the monthly reserve cover my next bill?

It spreads a whole year over twelve months. If a bill is due sooner, you may need money already set aside. Check payment dates separately.

How many bills can I enter?

Up to 24 items. Use “More rows” to add fields while keeping existing entries. For more items, calculate separately and add the annual amounts.
