The cost of smoking: what a pack a day adds up to in a year, and what it could grow into over 30 years
The price is on every pack. What isn’t: the yearly total, the federal tax inside it, and what the same money would be worth after 30 years, both on paper and in today’s dollars.
A pack a day at $9 costs you $63 a week, $274 a month and $3,287 a year. Invested every month for 30 years instead of smoked, the same money would come to $223,364, or $123,313 in today’s dollars. Everything below is the working: the number for other amounts, the tax inside the pack, and the honest version of the 30-year math.
Why a pack hides its price so well
Some expenses hurt, and some you never notice. A pack belongs to the second kind, for three reasons. First, the single amount is small enough that it never feels like a decision: at $9 you don’t weigh it, you pay. Second, there is no bill. A phone plan sends you a number once a month, a gym charges your card where you can see it, and a pack leaves a receipt you leave on the counter. Third, the rhythm is daily. Not on workdays, not once a week, but every single day, weekends and vacations included.
How much that matters shows up next to our coffee math. The coffee there is bought 250 times a year, because it is only bought on working days. The pack is bought 365.25 times; the decimal is the leap year. Same calculator, same formula, just no days off.
That is why smoking is not a health topic on this site but a textbook case: recurring, invisible, daily. If you smoke, you get no sermon here, just a number you can check yourself. This article says nothing about health; a money site is not the right source for that.
Five, ten, twenty, forty: the yearly number by amount
Hardly anyone smokes exactly one pack. The math scales cleanly with the amount as long as the price per cigarette stays the same: five cigarettes are a quarter of the pack, so a quarter of the money. The table runs four amounts, each at the same $9 for 20 cigarettes and each through the same calculator.

Read the table once from the bottom up. Going from two packs to one keeps $3,287 a year in your pocket. Going from one pack to ten cigarettes keeps $1,644. That is not an argument for smoking on, but against the idea that only quitting outright pays. At this price a single cigarette costs $0.45. One fewer a day keeps $164 a year.
How to run your own number
Your brand doesn’t cost $9, you don’t smoke exactly twenty a day? Then use your own numbers. It takes four steps, and the habit calculator is the same one that produced every number in this article. It stores nothing.
- Find the price. Take what you last paid for a pack, tax included, and check how many cigarettes are in it.
- Work out the daily amount. Divide the pack price by the number of cigarettes in the pack and multiply by how many you smoke on an ordinary day. If you smoke a whole pack every day, just use the pack price.
- Enter it in the habit calculator. Put the daily amount into “What does it cost once?” and set the rhythm to “daily”, or to “every working day” if you don’t smoke on weekends.
- Write down the monthly number. The monthly figure is what you can set up as an automatic transfer. The 30-year figure is the order of magnitude, not the plan.
Where the money goes: the federal tax in every pack
Part of the price is not tobacco but tax. At the federal level, the Internal Revenue Code taxes small cigarettes at $50.33 per thousand[1], which the Congressional Research Service puts at $1.01 per pack of 20[3]. That rate took effect on April 1, 2009, when the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act raised it from $19.50 per thousand[2]. States and local governments collect their own tobacco taxes on top of the federal one[3], so how much tax is in your pack depends on where you buy it.

The last row is the one that never happened. In 2021, the House version of the reconciliation bill H.R. 5376 would have doubled the federal rate to $100.66 per thousand, or $2.01 per pack of 20[3]. When we checked the Code on September 13, 2026, it still read $50.33 per thousand[1]. So for more than seventeen years, the federal part of the price has not changed by a single cent.
How much is smoked has changed a lot. The major cigarette manufacturers reported to the Federal Trade Commission that they sold 636.5 billion cigarettes in 1981, the highest year in the FTC’s tables, and 510.9 billion in 1991. In 2022, it was 173.5 billion, down from 190.2 billion in 2021[4]. For everyone who still smokes, the math is the same.
The 30-year math, the honest version
Now the calculation you have seen in plenty of finance videos, only complete. Invest the $274 a month that a pack a day costs, for 30 years, at a 5 percent annual return. At the end, $223,364 sits in the account. Of that, you paid in $98,618 yourself, and compounding added $124,746. A big part of the number is not magic, but thirty years of not spending.
And then the number the videos usually leave out. At 2 percent inflation a year, the rate the Federal Reserve aims for over the longer run[5], $223,364 thirty years from now buys what $123,313 buys today. That is the number you can plan with, because it is measured in the dollars you know now.
Why we use 5 percent and take inflation off
Elsewhere you will often see 7 percent. What rarely comes with it is whether that is before or after inflation and fund costs, and that decides how big the final number looks. We use 5 percent as a nominal assumption after costs, take the 2 percent inflation off visibly afterward, and print both assumptions under every result. There is no number for the future without an assumption.
An example: Dan, 38, a pack a day
Dan is 38, smokes a pack a day and pays $9 for it. He cares about his 60th birthday, 22 years away. With “Over how many years?” set to 22: if he invests the $274 a month, he has $129,453 in the account at 60, or $83,735 in today’s dollars. He would have paid in $72,320 himself.
His price won’t necessarily stay put either. The federal rate has not moved since 2009, but it is only one of the taxes in his pack, and it says nothing about what the store will charge next year. That is why the calculator takes his price, not ours: the day his pack costs more, he enters the new amount, and every number here moves with it.
What the curve doesn’t show
Three things, so the number doesn’t look bigger than it is. First: the curve shows what happens when the amount is actually invested every month. Money you simply no longer spend on cigarettes does not show up on any brokerage statement. Second: the math holds today’s price fixed for 30 years. Which prices apply by then, no source can tell you. Third: gains in a taxable account are taxed. According to the IRS, most net capital gain is taxed at 0, 15 or 20 percent depending on taxable income, with some exceptions above that[6]. The math takes no tax off, so the $223,364 is the upper edge, not what lands in your account.
And a fourth thing that has nothing to do with the math: if you want to quit and haven’t managed it yet, you have not failed at a number. This site does money. Three ways out, and what each one means per year
The math doesn’t blame anyone, but it knows three outcomes, and each has a dollar amount. The tree is not a guide to quitting; it translates three decisions into the unit your rent and paycheck are measured in.

Redirect the daily amount before it disappears
If you quit and simply stop spending the money, you never see it; it gets absorbed by the rest of the month. On the day you quit, set up an automatic transfer of $274 a month into a separate account, ideally for the day after payday. Then the number from this article has an account where you can count it after a year.

If you don’t quit: cut in half and make the difference visible
Ten instead of twenty a day is $1,644 a year that stays with you. That is a decision about a number of cigarettes, not about all or nothing. Buy the pack, not the carton: paying the price every single time at least keeps it in view. And move the $137 a month aside by automatic transfer.

Start with the emergency fund, not the brokerage account
The 30-year curve is the order of magnitude, not the first step. Without a cash buffer, the first emergency may force you to sell right when prices are down. I don’t smoke a whole pack a day. Does the math still apply?
Yes, with your number. The table above runs five, ten, twenty and forty cigarettes. For any other amount, divide the pack price by the number of cigarettes in the pack, multiply by how many you smoke a day, and enter that in the calculator. The math is linear: half the cigarettes cost half the money, per year and over 30 years.
My pack doesn’t cost $9. Why use that figure?
The $9 is an example, not a measured average. None of the sources in this article publishes a national average pack price for 2026, and state and local taxes differ from place to place. If your price is different, every row of the table changes in the same proportion. The calculator takes your price.
Why 365.25 days and not working days, like the coffee?
Because this article counts a pack on every day, weekends included. The coffee in our coffee math is only bought on working days. The extra quarter day is the leap year, spread over four years. If you only smoke on weekdays, switch the rhythm in the calculator to every working day.
How much of a pack is tax?
The federal part is $50.33 per thousand cigarettes, which the Congressional Research Service puts at $1.01 per pack of 20[3]. State and local tobacco taxes come on top and depend on where you buy. We don’t add them up for your state: there is no calculator for it here, and we don’t print a number without the working.
Is tax on the investment gains included?
No. Gains in a taxable account are taxed, and the IRS lists rates of 0, 15 or 20 percent on most net capital gain depending on taxable income[6]. The 30-year figure is therefore the upper edge. We would rather say so than print a bigger number.
Does this apply to vapes and heated tobacco?
The math does, the numbers don’t. If you spend a fixed amount a day on pods or sticks, enter that amount in the calculator. Taxes and prices are different, so there is no example number for them here.
